O hře

ZABIJÁK ŽIVOT
Premiéra: 22. 11. 2020 | 19:00 | Divadlo na Vinohradech

Když nevíte coby, kupte si dva hroby

Režie a choreografie: Marek Svobodník
Hudba: Josef Suk (Serenáda pro smyčcový orchestr Es-dur, op. 6)
Scéna: Petr Siedlaczek
Kostýmy: Pavel Knolle
Světelný design: Karel Šimek
Asistent choreografie: Igor Vejsada

EPITAF

Režie a choreografie: Petr Zuska
Hudba: Antonín Dvořák (Koncert pro violoncello a orchestr H-moll, op. 104)
Scéna: Petr Zuska a Pavel Knolle

Její hvězda strmě stoupala a vedle mnoha prestižních ocenění obdržela i Řád britského impéria.

LIFE THE KILLER
Premiere: 22nd November 2020 | 19:00 | Vinohrady Theatre Prague

If you’re lost for ideas, buy two graves

Direction and choreography: Marek Svobodník
Music: Josef Suk (Serenade for Strings in E flat major, Op. 6)
Stage set: Petr Siedlaczek
Costumes: Pavel Knolle
Light design: Karel Šimek
Assistant choreography: Igor Vejsada
Dance performance: 9 dancers
Duration: 30 minutes

Dark slapstick comedy with a detective plot, loosely based on motives by Agatha Christie. The gentle music of Suk’s Serenade in E flat major underlines a bitter story of one well-off family whose eldest member dies unexpectedly. All would be „in order” unless the death was a murder.
The story is also a satirical sketch of family disputes in which the grief over the loss is quickly replaced by a mutual grudge, suspicions and, most importantly, the desire to inherit property.

EPITAPH

Direction and choreography: Petr Zuska
Music: Antonín Dvořák (Concert for Cello and Orchestra in B minor, Op. 104)
Stage set: Petr Zuska and Pavel Knolle
Costumes: Pavel Knolle
Light design: Karel Šimek
Assistant choreography: Linda Svidró
Dance performance: 8 dancers
Duration: 40 minutes

Antonín Dvořák composed his Concert in B minor for Cello and Orchestra during the third year of his stay in the United States. The composition was influenced by his increasing homesickness and sadness caused by the news about the worsening health of Josefina Kounic whom he loved as a young man. She died soon after he returned to his motherland and Dvořák, shattered, rewrote parts of the already finished music score...

A phenomenal British Cellist Jacqueline du Pré demonstrated her unique talent from a very young age. At the age of 10, she was already able to interpret difficult parts of many opuses in a virtuosic musicianship, Dvořák’s opuses among others.
Her star was shining bright, she received numerous awards, she was even honoured with the award of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.
At the age of 21, she met her fated love, the pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim. Together they managed to hold the entire music world in awe for several years. At the age of 25, however, Jacquelin started losing the feeling in her fingertips and slowly multiple sclerosis deprived her of being able to play her beloved instrument. She died at the age of a mere 42 years...

I consider the cello an instrument capable of ‘speaking’.
And, in case of a magical interconnection of genius – both composer and musician, the words of the instrument become even clearer and more acute.
This is the case of the pair Dvořák - du Pré.
They did not meet in the time and space continuum, but they have met in a much more substantial dimension.
His music speaks from underneath her fingertips and the cello laughs and cries, shouts and soothes, remembers and hopes, rejoices and suffers...
And most importantly it loves passionately and turbulently only to calmly and quietly leave this world a bit later...

The premiere is dedicated to 'Jackie’ who would have celebrated her 85th birthday this year.

Petr Zuska

Petr Zuska (*1968)
Choreograf a režisér, tanečník

Jelikož práce v divadle zahrnuje přehršel volného času, začal se během něj Marek Svobodník věnovat choreografii, tedy oboru, kde výška a sošný zjev sehrávají pramalou roli. Odvahu angažovat Svobodníka jako tvůrce a choreografa našli tyto převážně tuzemské soubory: Jihočeské divadlo v Českých Budějovicích (Inscenační porada, Faunovo odpoledne), Národní divadlo Brno (Catch27, Čertstory), Pražský komorní balet (Chvilka POEzie), Národní divadlo Moravskoslezské (opera Lady Macbeth z Mcenského Újezdu), Dekkadancers (HornyBach, Poslední večeře, Hangar18) a Národní divadlo v Praze (Fight for a one thing). Mnichovský soubor Bayerischer Staatsballett II uváděl jeho parafrázi slavného Kyliánova Petite mort nazvanou Petite Corde.

Petr Zuska (*1968)

Choreographer, stage director and dancer

Petr Zuska is a European-format creator, an extraordinary choreographer within the context of Czech dance who has worked with world-renowned ballet companies. In his works, he brings to bear a broad scale of creative vocabulary, ranging from the high bel canto of the neo-classical style through an innovative approach to modern creation. His productions are sophisticated, full-blooded, reflecting the world of symbols and archetypes, spiritual questions, as well as moral principles.  He is among the precious few choreographers capable of imbuing his works with humour, wit and hyperbole.

Petr Zuska graduated from the Music and Dance Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague where he studied choreography and non-verbal theatre direction (1994). During his performing career, he was a soloist in Pantomima Ladislava Fialky in Divadlo Na Zábradlí theatre, Prague Chamber Ballet of Pavel Šmok, Ballet of the National Theatre, ballet companies in Munich, Augsburg and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montreal. He performed not only in classical ballet productions, but mainly in productions of renowned contemporary artists (such as Czechs Jiří Kylián, Pavel Šmok and Libor Vaculík, or foreign artists Alvin Ailey, Gerhard Bohner, Robert North, Mats Ek, Hans van Manen, Christopher Bruce, Ohad Naharin, Nacho Duato, Itzik Gallili and others). As a dancer, he performed in many countries of the world. In the 1990s he was also a permanent guest artist at the National Theatre In Brno and Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava.

From 2002 to 2017, Petr Zuska was Artistic Director of the Czech National Ballet in Prague. During his time as head of the company, he produced for the National Theatre six feature-length ballets and numerous other, one-act, pieces. Under Zuska, the Czech National Ballet gave performances on 36 prominent stages globally, including Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Washington D. C., Houston, Athens, Bonn, Budapest, Tallinn, Beijing, Shanghai, Paris and Tel Aviv.
Since 1990, Petr Zuska has created choreographies for more than 50 productions for both foreign and Czech companies, including the Hamburg Ballett, Ballett Augsburg, the Semperoper in Dresden, the Latvian National Opera in Riga, the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, the Royal Danish Ballet, the Ballett Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the West Australian Ballet in Perth, the Finnish National Ballet, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, the Boston Ballet, the Czech National Ballet in Prague and the National Theatre Ballet in Brno, Laterna magika, the Prague Chamber Ballet and Bohemia Ballet – the ensemble of the Prague Dance Conservatory, and, of course, the Czech National Ballet. In addition, he has collaborated on directing and choreographing several drama productions.
The numerous prestigious accolades Petr Zuska has received for his performances and choreographies include the Thalia Prize (1993 and 1997), the Prix Dom Perignon (1999), the Original Choreography prize within the Modern Dance Competition (2006, 2008), the Choreography of the Year (1996 and 2002), the Czech Literary Fund Prize (1993 and 1994), the Opera Plus Prize (2015 and 2017) for his achievements as the head of the Czech National Ballet and for 25 years of choreographic work, and the Czech Ministry of Culture Award for an achievement in theatre (2017). He was awarded a prize for the best choreography at the ČR BALET 2019 dance festival for his production “A Bouquet of Czech Folktales” for the Prague Chamber Ballet.

Marek Svobodník (*1984)

Choreographer and dancer

He studied dance at a conservatory in the far away Brno. As a dancer, he performed at the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre (2003–2006), Laterna Magica (2006–2008) and the National Theatre in Brno (2008–2012) where he (just barely) made it to be a soloist.
Currently, he is a member of the National Theatre and he has also been accepted as a permanent guest artist by the Laterna Magica where he is allowed to dance twice a year in the Wonderful Circus production.
As a dancer of a significant height and sculptural physique, he has been cast in small and less significant roles of a classical as well as modern repertoire. As one example for all, the role of the Notary in the world-wide known choreography the Wayward Daughter by Sir Frederick Ashton can be named.
Apart from the stone theatres, he has cooperated with ProART Company, Pas de Theatre, Department of Alternative Theatre of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, and the Board of Ballet Aldermen.
Since 2012 he has been a member of the DEKKADANCERS group, where he made it (after several years and again just barely) to be one of the leaders of the ensemble.
As the work at a theatre involves plenty of free time, Marek Svobodník used it meaningfully and started showing interest in choreography - a field of art in which significant height and sculptural physique play only very insignificant role. Therefore, it comes as no surprise, that his deeds in this field of art have also played a less significant role in the context of theatrical activities in the Czech Republic and Central Europe. The following (predominantly domestic) ensembles found the courage to engage Svobodník as a choreographer: South Bohemian Theatre in České Budějovice (Inscenační Porada, The Afternoon of a Faun), National Theatre in Brno (Catch27, Čertstory), Prague Chamber Ballet (Time for POEtry), National Moravian-Silesian Theatre (opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District), Dekkadancers (HornyBach, Last Supper, Hangar18) and the National Theatre in Prague (Fight for One Thing). The Bayerischer Staatsballett II in Munich staged his paraphrase of Kylian’s famous Petite Mort titled Petite Corde.
